News Literacy Program Coordinator

November 13th, 2017 by CIVIX

CIVIX is seeking a motivated and hard-working individual to take on the role of News Literacy Program Coordinator.

Working with the CIVIX team, you will contribute to the development and delivery of a news literacy initiative during and between elections, launching in the spring of 2018.

BACKGROUND

CIVIX is Canada’s leading civic education charity dedicated to fostering the habits of active and engaged citizenship among young people. We work with teachers to provide authentic learning opportunities to help students practice their rights and responsibilities as citizens and connect with their democratic institutions. Rather than learn about civics and citizenship from a textbook, students experience it firsthand with relevant events and issues in real-time.

CIVIX programming focuses on the themes of elections, government budgets, citizen consultations, news literacy and elected representatives. CIVIX also facilitates professional development opportunities for educators to improve their capacity and commitment to civic education.

Our flagship program, Student Vote, is a parallel election for students under the voting age coinciding with general elections. Students learn about government and democracy, discuss campaign issues, research the parties and platforms, and consume media. In the culminating activity, students cast ballots for the official local candidates and the results are shared with media for broadcast and publication. In the last federal election, 922,000 students cast a ballot from 6,662 schools across Canada, representing all 338 electoral districts.

In partnership with the Canadian Journalism Foundation, we will be launching a news literacy program to provide school-aged Canadians an understanding of the role of journalism in a healthy democracy and the tools to find and filter information online. The activities and tools will be designed for use during and between elections.
