Student Vote: Register for the Saskatchewan Municipal and School Board Elections

September 5th, 2016 by CIVIX

Elementary and high schools in Saskatchewan are invited to participate in the Student Vote program coinciding with the October municipal and school board elections.

Student Vote provides students with an opportunity to learn about government and the electoral process, research the issues and platforms, discuss relevant issues and cast ballots for the official election candidates.

Student Vote is a great way to create a teachable moment out of the election and encourage discussion about local issues. Involve your students in this province-wide initiative and connect them with their peers in the community through Student Vote Day.

CIVIX is organizing the Student Vote project for the Saskatchewan local elections with support from the Government of Saskatchewan and the Government of Canada.

Schools can sign up today by visiting www.studentvote.ca/registration or by calling our team toll-free at 1-866-488-8775.

Participating schools will receive activity resources, posters, an election manual, ballots and ballot boxes. Materials are available in English and French and there is no cost to participate. Registration is open until October 7.

Registered schools will also receive access to online tools, including lesson plans, PowerPoint presentations, and municipality and school board profiles on the election website: http://studentvote.ca/skmunicipal2016/

This will be the eighth Student Vote project coordinated in Saskatchewan since 2004. In the 2015 federal election, 33,128 Saskatchewan students cast ballots from 454 schools. You can see the results for Saskatchewan ridings here.
