Weekly Round-Up: May 30, 2014
Each Friday, CIVIX provides a digest of the major events in Canadian politics.
Ontario election update
The Ontario election is coming down to the wire! Less than two weeks remain until election day and a new poll shows the race is “too close to call.” Excited to vote? Advance polls begin on Saturday.
Kathleen Wynne and Andrea Horwath met in Thunder Bay on Monday for the “northern debate” and the French-language debate was held on Tuesday. The televised leaders’ debate – featuring Wynne, Hudak and Horwath – takes place on Tuesday.
Student Vote ballots left our warehouse this week (click here to see photos of our distribution team hard at work) and schools across the province are getting involved in the campaign. All-candidates’ debates at Student Vote schools received media coverage in Guelph and Orillia, and our Olivia Dorey moderated an all-candidates’ meeting in Ottawa Centre.
Leadership races
Edmonton-Calder MLA David Eggen confirmed that he would be entering the Alberta NDP leadership race. Eggen is the first candidate to come forward.
Across the aisle, Calgary-Hays MLA Ric McIver officially launched his Alberta PC leadership bid.
Retirements
Roméo Dallaire announced that he is resigning from the Senate. His last day will be June 17. Dallaire was appointed to the Senate by Prime Minister Paul Martin in 2005.
Conservative MP Gerald Keddy will not be seeking re-election. Keddy has represented Nova Scotia’s South Shore – St Margaret’s riding since 1997. We spoke to Mr. Keddy about civic education in February.
What we’ve been up to
CIVIX President Taylor Gunn took part in Inspire Democracy workshops in Ottawa and Vancouver this week, and will take part in another next week in Winnipeg.
We’ve celebrated two team birthdays recently. Cheers, Conor and Vicky!
