The first Student Vote ballot was cast in October 2003, thanks to the dedication of a small and ambitious team. CIVIX has since grown to become a global leader in championing civic education with extraordinary teams in Canada, Colombia and Chile. As ever, our vision is a strong and inclusive democracy where all young people are ready, willing, and able to participate.

CIVIX is an invaluable resource for teachers. Political literacy is often overlooked, but crucial for our students. CIVIX’s experiential learning approach is highly engaging, and I appreciate how relevant the programs are — this is what our democracy needs.

20 Years of CIVIX

Looking forward

As CIVIX moves into its next chapter, we will continue to expand our expertise and programming in response to the needs of Canadian educators and youth. Over the next 5 years we will:

  • Build an archetype of a ‘CIVIX school’ where civics is prioritized across subjects and grades
  • Engage youth directly with new experiential learning opportunities such as parliamentary simulations
  • Develop new opportunities for teacher education and capacity building
  • Grow our international programming
  • Make CIVIX a centre for civic education and research best practices

As a charity that offers resources to teachers at no cost, CIVIX will rely on the generous support of those who share our view of education as being fundamental to democracy to build on our success and continue this work.
