Peter Bevan-Baker and the PEI Green Party win minority government in province-wide Student Vote

More than 5,500 elementary, intermediate and high school students participated in the Student Vote program for the 2019 Prince Edward Island provincial election.

After learning about democracy and informed citizenship, researching the parties and platforms, and debating the future of Prince Edward Island, students cast ballots for the official candidates running in their school’s electoral district.

As of 4:00 p.m. today, 42 schools had reported their election results, representing 26 provincial electoral districts. In total, 5,561 ballots were cast by student participants; 5,314 valid ballots and 247 rejected ballots.

Students elected Peter Bevan-Baker and the Green Party to form a minority government with 11 seats and 36.7 per cent of the vote. Bevan-Baker also won in his electoral district of New Haven—Rocky Point.

Dennis King and the Progressive Conservative Party took 10 seats and will form the Official Opposition, receiving 30.7 per cent of the vote. King was defeated in his electoral district of Brackley—Hunter River.

Joe Byrne and the New Democratic Party won 1 seat and received 7.5 per cent of the vote. Byrne lost in his electoral district of Charlottetown—Victoria Park.

Student Vote participants also cast ballots for the electoral reform referendum. The referendum was approved by a majority of students in 20 electoral districts (80 per cent of 25 districts where referendum results were submitted), meeting the 60 per cent threshold required to be legally binding. In total, 4,568 students cast ballots on the referendum; overall, 53.6 per cent voted ‘Yes’ and 46.4 per cent voted ‘No’.

The Student Vote project for the 2019 Prince Edward Island provincial election was made possible by Elections PEI and the Government of Canada.
