What are\u00a0some of the issues and challenges associated with balancing\u00a0human needs\/wants and environmental stewardship? How\u00a0have people responded to the challenges and opportunities\u00a0presented by the physical environment in your community?\u00a0What actions would you take to improve your community?<\/p>\n<h3>OVERVIEW<\/h3>\n<p>Municipalities are responsible for meeting their communities\u2019\u00a0needs and fulfilling duties, such as delivering local services and\u00a0managing the growth and well-being of the community.<\/p>\n<p>As an introduction to the topic, students will discuss what they\u00a0know about their municipality and reflect on what they like\u00a0about it and what makes it unique. As a class, students review\u00a0the features and services of municipalities in Ontario, and\u00a0investigate specific information of their own city, town, village\u00a0or township. Afterwards, students will complete one activity\u00a0dedicated to either assessing environmental stewardship,\u00a0developing a plan of action to improve their community or\u00a0evaluating developments due to the physical environment.\u00a0In the Consolidation activity, students reflect on why it is\u00a0important to take an active role in their community.<\/p>\n<h3>LEARNING GOALS<\/h3>\n<p>We are learning to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>develop an understanding of the features and\u00a0responsibilities of municipalities in Ontario and our\u00a0own municipality (Citizenship Education Framework \u2013\u00a0Structures);<\/li>\n<li>engage in the inquiry process to formulate questions,\u00a0and interpret and analyze issues and developments in\u00a0our community (Global Competencies \u2013 Critical Thinking\u00a0&amp; Problem Solving);<\/li>\n<li>develop a plan of action and analyze ways to improve our\u00a0municipality (Concepts of Thinking \u2013 Perspective);<\/li>\n<li>explain why it is important to be an active member of\u00a0the community (Global Competencies &#8211; Citizenship).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>SUCCESS CRITERIA<\/h3>\n<p>I CAN\u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>describe the features and responsibilities of\u00a0municipalities in Ontario;<\/li>\n<li>explain how my municipality impacts the community;<\/li>\n<li>analyze issues or developments in my community;<\/li>\n<li>develop an action plan to improve our municipality;<\/li>\n<li>explain why it is important to be an active member of\u00a0the community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>CURRICULUM LINKS<\/h3>\n<p><em>Social Studies Gr. 4<\/em> B2, B2.1, B2.5\u00a0 Gr. 5 B1, B1.1, B1.2<br \/>\n<em>Writing<\/em> 1, 1.5<br \/>\n<em>Geography Gr. 7<\/em> A1, A1.1, A1.2\u00a0 Gr. 8 A1, A1.3<br \/>\n<em>Writing<\/em> 1, 1.5<br \/>\n<em>Reading<\/em> 1, 1.1<\/p>\n<h3>MINDS ON<\/h3>\n<p>Ask students if they know the name of their city\/town\/village\/township and invite them to share any background knowledge, as well as thoughts and opinions. Questions to\u00a0prompt discussion:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What do you love most about our community?<\/li>\n<li>What makes it unique or special?<\/li>\n<li>What makes it a good place to live?<\/li>\n<li>Why do people come to live here or visit?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>ACTION<\/h3>\n<p>1. Use the \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=21V8tZjFYnU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Municipalities in Ontario<\/a>\u2019 video (2:46 min)\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/civix.ca\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Slide-deck-Municipalities-Elementary.pptx\">accompanying slide deck<\/a> to discuss the features,\u00a0responsibilities and composition of municipalities in the\u00a0province.<\/p>\n<p>2. As a class and\/or in groups, review the following\u00a0information using your municipality\u2019s website and other local\u00a0sources. Have students fill out <a href=\"http:\/\/civix.ca\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Activity-5.1-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Activity 5.1<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0What is our municipality type? Are we part of an\u00a0upper\u2011tier municipality? If so, which one?<\/li>\n<li>What are the geographic borders of our municipality?<\/li>\n<li>What are some major landforms in our municipality?<\/li>\n<li>What are some attractions or landmarks in our\u00a0municipality?<\/li>\n<li>What are some services and programs provided by our\u00a0municipality?<\/li>\n<li>What are some recent announcements by the\u00a0municipality?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><em><strong>Suggested Activities (by grade level)<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n<h4><strong>GRADE 4<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Review the concept of <strong>environmental stewardship<\/strong>. It\u00a0refers to responsible use and the protection of the natural\u00a0environment through conservation and sustainable\u00a0practices.<\/li>\n<li>Remind students that municipalities must think about\u00a0how to balance human needs and wants with the\u00a0environmental stewardship of the community.<\/li>\n<li>Individually or in pairs, have students investigate an\u00a0example in the community where human needs\/wants\u00a0may have presented a challenge to environmental\u00a0stewardship. Have students fill out <a href=\"http:\/\/civix.ca\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Activity-5.2-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Activity 5.2<\/a> to guide\u00a0their investigation and analysis.<\/li>\n<li>Give students time to share their work with their peers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>GRADE 5<\/h4>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li>Through a whole class discussion, pose the following\u00a0questions to your students. Are you satisfied with your\u00a0community? Can you identify any problems or issues?\u00a0What actions would you take to make improvements?<\/li>\n<li>Using <a href=\"http:\/\/civix.ca\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Activity-5.3.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Activity 5.3<\/a>, ask students to create a plan of action\u00a0to address an issue in their community. Guiding questions:\n<ul>\n<li>What is the issue you want to address?<\/li>\n<li>What factors are behind the issue?<\/li>\n<li>What actions would you suggest? What is your\u00a0proposal?<\/li>\n<li>How could the municipality help? Could citizens play\u00a0a role? If so, how?<\/li>\n<li>Which members from the community would benefit\u00a0and how?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Have students present their plan of action through any\u00a0format they choose \u2013 it could be an op-ed article, poem,\u00a0poster, video, diorama or slide deck.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>GRADE 7<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Review the major landforms and <strong>physical landscapes<\/strong> in\u00a0your community.<\/li>\n<li>Ask students to select one landform or aspect of the physical\u00a0environment in the municipality and analyze its impact on\u00a0the community using a concept map. Guiding questions:\n<ul>\n<li>How have people responded to the challenges\u00a0and opportunities presented by the physical\u00a0environment in our community?<\/li>\n<li>How have climate and landforms led to the\u00a0development of certain industries in our community?<\/li>\n<li>Who has benefited from this development? Who\u00a0has not benefited?<\/li>\n<li>Are there various perspectives about this\u00a0development? What are they? How do they differ?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Give students time to share their work with their peers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>GRADE 8<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Review the concept of <strong>sustainability<\/strong>. Brainstorm a few\u00a0examples as a class (e.g., energy-efficient buildings,\u00a0use of renewable sources of energy, a comprehensive\u00a0public transportation system, community gardens, roof\u00a0gardens, green canopies, naturalized parks with native\u00a0species, programs for waste and water recycling).<\/li>\n<li>In pairs or small groups, have students complete a plan\u00a0of action for making the community more sustainable.\u00a0This plan should include an assessment of the challenges\u00a0that may develop as a result of the proposed changes\u00a0and also look at who in the community would be\u00a0impacted in a negative way.<\/li>\n<li>Have students present their plan of action through any\u00a0format they choose \u2013 it could be a poster, diorama, map,\u00a0slide deck or multi-media piece.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>Alternative Activity:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Field trip &#8211; Community walk<\/em><\/p>\n<p>What does a community need? What does your community\/ municipality have? Does your community have schools, a\u00a0library, a grocery store, parks, houses, emergency services,\u00a0transportation and businesses? Let\u2019s go find out!<\/p>\n<p>Take the class out for a walk to discover what you can see\u00a0in your neighbourhood. Prepare for the walk by looking at\u00a0the list of municipal responsibilities and have students use\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/civix.ca\/resources\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Activity-5.4.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Activity 5.4<\/a> to write down things they see on the walk that\u00a0relate to these areas.<\/p>\n<h3>CONSOLIDATION<\/h3>\n<p>Have a brief closing discussion about your municipality or ask\u00a0students to write a reflection on one or more of the following\u00a0questions based on which activities were completed.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why do you think it is important for governments\u00a0or municipalities to consult with members of the\u00a0community? Explain your thinking with specific examples\u00a0from the unit.<\/li>\n<li>Why is it important for community members to take an\u00a0active role in their municipality?<\/li>\n<li>What are some personal actions you can take to improve\u00a0your community? What would be the impact?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>TIPS FOR TEACHERS<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The unit is not necessarily meant to be covered entirely\u00a0in one period.
