Rep Day Nova Scotia
Rep Day is a civic education initiative that connects elected representatives with high school students for a dialogue on current political issues. Rep Day aims to break down the stereotypes that young people have of politicians and the political process, and develop a better understanding of and a sense of trust in the people and institutions within our democracy.
We know that some teachers have been conducting in-school visits with their elected representatives for years. However, we also know that teaching is an extremely time consuming job, and we want to offer additional resources and support to assist in this type of activity.
It is our hope that by increasing the frequency, scope and quality of the visits, we will encourage an ongoing dialogue between young people and their elected officials, while improving rates of democratic engagement.
CIVIX has prepared several resource materials which are designed to help prepare for and organize your Rep Day event.
The suggested learning and activities are intended to improve civic literacy, introduce concepts in democracy and electoral politics, and increase awareness about the workings of government and current political affairs.
Each lesson has several options available, for the ease of adapting it to your particular classroom or grade level. Please use, modify and choose from these lessons as you see fit. We hope you find it easy to navigate and implement in your classroom. The lessons build upon one another and have a clear flow, but various aspects can be rearranged depending on your classroom needs or available time.
Each lesson contains a structured plan with suggested teaching strategies, editable PowerPoints, worksheets, handouts and helpful additional resources. The PowerPoint presentations are meant to accompany the instruction or learning portions of the lesson.
As always, we are here to help. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
