Even though they are under the voting age, 15,000 students from throughout New Brunswick had the opportunity to vote for candidates running for their local government council or rural district advisory committee.

Student Vote is a dynamic experiential learning program designed to cultivate the habits of active and informed citizenship among students. It empowers students to engage in the democratic process by casting ballots for official candidates in a parallel election.

Participating students learned about local government and the electoral process, and explored the issues and candidates through various activities. In the culminating activity, students took on the roles of election workers and coordinated a vote within their schools. 

By 5:00 pm AT on Monday, May 11, 112 schools had submitted their Student Vote results, from 51 municipalities and rural districts. More than 50,000 votes were cast for mayors, councillors, as well as advisory committee members and district education council members.

RESULTS HIGHLIGHTS:

• Fredericton: In total, 3,370 students cast ballots from 13 schools in Fredericton. Jenica Atwin was elected mayor with 51% of the Student Vote.
• Moncton: In total, 1,699 students cast ballots from 11 schools in Moncton. Shawn Crossman was elected mayor with 44% of the Student Vote.
• Saint John: In total, 948 students cast ballots from 9 schools in Saint John. Barry Ogden was elected mayor with 40% of the Student Vote.
• Miramichi: In total, 513 students cast ballots from 6 schools in Miramichi. Tiffany Gallivan was elected mayor with 31% of the Student Vote. 
• Bathurst: Kim Chamberlain was elected mayor.  
• Belle-Baie: Rachel Boudeau was elected mayor.    
• Campbellton: Michel Soucy was elected mayor.   
• Carleton North: Andrew Harvey was elected mayor.   
• Dieppe: Hélène Boudreau was elected mayor.  
• Edmundston: Eric Marquis was elected mayor.  
• Grand Falls: David Raines was elected mayor.    
• St. Stephen: Steven Backman was elected mayor.   
• Tracadie: Guy Basque was elected mayor.   
• Woodstock: Trina Jones was elected mayor.
