Even though they are under the voting age, 13,522 elementary and high school students throughout Ontario had the opportunity to vote for candidates running for their municipal councils and school boards.
The Student Vote program is an experiential learning program that enables teachers to bring democracy to life in the classroom, and empowers students to practice the habits of active and engaged citizenship.
For The Winnipeg Free Press, Maggie Macintosh reported on Manitoba’s Student Vote in a visit to The Met Centre for Arts and Technology.
“School is a place to start promoting (the democratic) process, so that as these students come of age to vote, they are standing up for their values and finding people that represent their values,” Kurt Hangle, a Grade 9 teacher-adviser in the Exchange District, told Macintosh.
