More than 16,000 elementary, intermediate and high school students took part in Student Vote Newfoundland and Labrador, held in conjunction with the 2025 provincial election.
After learning about government and democracy, exploring the parties and candidates, and discussing the future of the province, students cast ballots in a parallel election.
In total, 16,442 total votes were reported from 117 schools, with results from all 40 electoral districts. This includes 15,889 accepted ballots and 553 rejected ballots.
Students elected a Progressive Conservative government, with the Liberal Party forming the official opposition.
- The PC Party won 23 seats and received 38.8% of the popular vote. Tony Wakeham won his Stephenville – Port au Port seat.
- The Liberal Party won 12 seats and received 38.9% of the popular vote. John Hogan won his Windsor Lake seat.
- The NDP won 2 seats and received 15.9% of the popular vote. Jim Dinn won his St. John’s Centre seat.
- Three Independent and Non-Affiliated candidates were elected: Paul Lane (Mount Pearl – Southlands), Eddie Joyce (Humber – Bay of Islands) and Edward Thomas Cole (Carbonear – Trinity – Bay de Verde).

Student Vote is an experiential civic literacy program that provides students under the voting age with the opportunity to practice the habits of active and informed citizenship. Participating schools received a variety of non-partisan educational materials to teach about government and the election process, and encourage research and discussion about the issues and candidates. Ballots, ballot boxes and voting screens were also provided for the coordination of Student Vote Day.
Student Vote is a program of CIVIX, a non-partisan registered Canadian charity dedicated to strengthening democracy through civic education. CIVIX programming focuses on elections, government budgets, elected representatives, constructive dialogue and digital media literacy.
