This November, CIVIX held its first ever Youth Parliament of Canada. This innovative program – the first of its kind to take place on the Hill in over four decades – brought together youth from across Canada to strengthen their understanding of democracy through a model parliament simulation and other experiential parliamentary activities.

Upon announcement of the program in June, over 500 people aged 16-20 from across the country applied to the Youth Parliament of Canada. Through a rigorous selection process, 73 exemplary youth representing every province and territory were selected to join us in Ottawa.

Over the course of five days, these young leaders participated in a variety of core parliamentary proceedings, including Members’ Statements, Question Period, debate, and committee work to draft and amend legislation while in the Senate Chamber. Additional programming featured panels and discussions with Members of Parliament, Senators, public servants, political staff, and journalists. Through CIVIX’s Rep Day program, participants also had the opportunity to meet and engage directly with their MPs.

CIVIX was blown away by the enthusiasm and intellect demonstrated by the Youth Parliament participants. From informative panels, to delivering member statements, participating in Question Period, to a surprise emergency sitting in the Senate, these young delegates consistently exceeded expectations.

In a post-program survey, participants reported heightened knowledge of the parliamentary process, civic skills, and capacity for constructive dialogue. The experience also fostered a powerful sense of national belonging among youth from across the country.

“The experience enhanced my ability to express ideas clearly, consider various viewpoints and defend my arguments logically. It taught me to scrutinize details and challenge assumptions which are crucial skills for effective advocacy and legal reasoning.”

We could not be more thrilled with how the inaugural Youth program played out. We look forward to what comes next, both for the future of the Youth Parliament of Canada program and for these bright young leaders.
