Youth Parliament of Canada (YPC)

The Youth Parliament of Canada will bring together 75 young people, ages 16 to 20, for a 4-day bilingual parliamentary simulation in Ottawa.

Participants will take part in authentic parliamentary activities inside the Senate Chambers, including legislative debates, committee work, and question period. The program also features the opportunity to meet with politicians, political staff, journalists, and civic leaders.

This immersive experience offers a unique opportunity to:

  • Deepen understanding of Canadian democracy
  • Practice skills like persuasion, negotiation, and compromise
  • Explore political identity in a supportive, non-partisan setting
  • Connect with diverse youth from across the country

The YPC is designed to inspire a new generation of engaged citizens and future leaders—helping young people better understand their country and their role within it.

What’s Included

Participation in the Youth Parliament of Canada is fully funded to ensure accessibility for youth from across the country.

If selected, you will receive:

  • Round-trip travel to Ottawa from your home community
  • Four nights of accommodation in Ottawa
  • All meals during the event
  • Access to all program activities, including simulations in the Senate Chambers and special events

Who Should Apply?

We’re looking for a diverse group of young people aged 16 to 20 who are:

  • Curious about how politics and democracy work
  • Open to learning and engaging with different perspectives
  • Excited to meet other youth from across Canada
  • Committed to participating fully in a supportive, non-partisan environment

You don’t need to be part of a political party or have any prior experience in politics. Whether you’re just starting to explore your views or already passionate about civic issues, we encourage you to apply.

Selections will also aim to reflect regional diversity, linguistic balance, and a broad range of backgrounds, identities, and lived experiences.

Who can apply?

Young people aged 16 to 20 from anywhere in Canada are eligible to apply. Eligible students must be at least 16 years of age by November 6, 2025. You don’t need any political experience—just curiosity, openness, and a willingness to engage.

How do I apply?

Applications will open on June 12, 2025 and close on July 31, 2025 at 11:59 PM (Pacific Time). You’ll need to complete an online form and submit a 500 word essay or 3 minute video answering the following questions:

  • Why are you interested in participating in the Youth Parliament of Canada?
  • What do you hope to learn or experience through this opportunity?

Do I need to speak both English and French?

No. The program is bilingual, but you do not need to be fluent in both official languages to participate. We’ll provide interpretation and support to ensure everyone can fully engage.

How much does it cost?

There is no cost to participate. Travel, accommodations, meals, and program materials are fully covered.

What is the time commitment for this program?

Selected participants must be available for the entire duration of the program from November 6th-10th. Additionally, there will be a mandatory virtual meeting with participants leading up to the weekend in Ottawa.

Where will we stay in Ottawa?

Participants will stay in supervised accommodations in central Ottawa. Details will be shared with selected participants and their families.

What kinds of activities will we do?

Participants will take part in a range of activities, including:

  • Simulated debates and votes in the Senate Chambers
  • Committee discussions and Question Period
  • Meetings/events with elected officials, journalists, and civic leaders
  • Opportunities to collaborate, reflect, and connect with peers
  • Cultural activities and tours

Is this a partisan event?

This event is designed to explore how democracy works, not to promote any political party, therefore this is a non-partisan event. If you are a member of a political party, you are more than welcome at the event provided that you do not promote any particular political party or ideology.

What is the dress code?

Given that participants will be meeting with politicians and other officials, the dress code for the event is business casual. That said, we will work with participants to ensure that the dress code is not a barrier to participation.

Are all program events mandatory?

Yes, all participants must attend all of the scheduled events.

Can I participate if I have accessibility needs?

Absolutely. We are committed to making the program accessible to all participants. Please let us know about any needs in your application, and we’ll work with you to provide appropriate support.
