More than 1,600 elementary, intermediate and high school students took part in Student Vote Yukon, held in conjunction with the 2025 territorial election and plebiscite.

After learning about government and democracy, exploring the parties and candidates, and discussing the future of the territory, students cast ballots in a parallel vote.

In total, 1,698 total votes were reported for the territorial election from 13 schools, with results from 10 out of 21 electoral districts.

Students elected a Yukon Party government, with the Yukon NDP forming the official opposition.

  • The Yukon Party won 7 seats and received 42.8% of the popular vote.
  • The Yukon NDP won 3 seats and received 37.3% of the popular vote.
  • The Yukon Liberal Party did not win any seats and received 19.8% of the popular vote.

Student Vote participants also cast ballots in a parallel plebiscite on electoral reform. A majority of students supported the proposal to change Yukon’s voting system to  ranked vote. Overall, 56.3% voted ‘Yes’ (to change to a ranked vote system) and 43.7% voted ‘No’ (to keep the current first past the post system).

Student Vote is an experiential civic literacy program that provides students under the voting age with the opportunity to practice the habits of active and informed citizenship. Participating schools received a variety of non-partisan educational materials to teach about government and the election process, and encourage research and discussion about the issues, candidates and plebiscite. Ballots, ballot boxes and voting screens were also provided for the coordination of Student Vote Day.
